Out with the old!

... or looking back fondly?

I have a desk calendar which sits by the bed, with a scripture verse for every day of the year. Today's reads:

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

It's from Psalm 139 (verses 23 & 24) and serves well as an end of year aspiration. Because the problem with new year resolutions and the conscience-clearing exercises which often accompany them, is that they miss our blind spots. We think we know what's best for us in the future, just like we think we know our vices and misdemeanours. But, in my case anyway, I know that's not true and my family wastes no time in confirming my self-delusions!

So let God, who knows our hearts, our inmost thoughts and our purpose and gifts - because he made us and equipped us - be our guide.

Expose your hurts to his gentle touch and put your hand into his strong grip. Don't be deceived into assuming the way ahead will be any easier than coming to terms with the past. But we have the Lord's promise that "he will never leave you, nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy, chapter 31, verse 6), which is enough.

Be blessed!
