Lighten our darkness

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. Genesis 1.16

Good news shone out of an otherwise bleak scenario. No I am not referring to Saudi Arabia's iconoclastic victory at the World Cup, rather the surprise victories of Somalia's military forces which are bringing stability to a country wracked by drought and starvation. As in too many other situations in the world today, relief efforts have been hampered by armed conflict.

On the news this morning a local leader was asked what they were glad to see the back of Al-Shabaab, the Islamic militant group which has been terrorising Somalia. He replied that they were not true Muslims. Can we not all warm to the consternation caused by those who abuse faith to justify cruel behaviour? And do we not all long for religious freedom for everybody?

A world in which everyone is free to worship according to their conscience/ belief is good news because it establishes a level and open playing field for mission. If we believe that the source of our faith holds the key to life in its fulness, what have we to fear from everyone being free to choose? Bless the peace-makers and those who wrestle and fight a pray for justice and let the seeking after truth begin - without fear or favour.
